Aiken, S.C. -- Like a college football game where fans wear a specific team color to show their enthusiasm, Savannah River Remediation (SRR) employees participated in a "blackout" day to show their teamwork and support for safety.

All SRR employees received a black golf shirt emblazed with the SRR logo and a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) logo. They wore the shirts on July 28 at the encouragement of SRR President and Project Manager Dave Olson.

"Wearing the shirts is just another visible reminder that our employees work safely," Olson said. "When citizens see our employees wearing these shirts in the community, it should remind them that the safe performance of our job is paramount."

The U.S. Department of Energy-VPP program promotes improved safety and health performance through public recognition of outstanding programs. DOE-VPP provides several proven benefits to participating sites, including improved labor/management relations, reduced workplace injuries and illnesses, increased employee involvement, improved morale, reduced absenteeism and public recognition.

On May 19, 2011, SRR was awarded a VPP flag during a DOE presentation to signify Star Status, signifying its dedication and implementation of safety and other health programs.

"We have been leaders in the DOE complex in safety, which was evident recently with SRR being awarded the URS Safe Project of the Year Award, on the heels of reaching 5 million hours of working without a day away from work because of an injury. Achieving VPP Star status recently is another significant achievement," Olson added.

SRR is the Savannah River Site's Liquid Waste contractor for DOE. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
