AIKEN, S.C. – As the calendar page has flipped to a new year, one thing is constant for Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR): there have been no reportable radiological events since July 1, 2009, when SRR began as the Liquid Waste contractor for the Savannah River Site.
That statistic means the public, workers and the environment have been safe from radiological incidents, said Dave Olson, SRR Operations and Deputy Project Manager.
"SRR workers have done an outstanding job in the area of radiological safety," he said. "That goal was attainable because of our employees' sound adherence to radiological work requirements and practices as they accomplish the complex mission of safe tank closure."
Contributing to SRR's radiological safety is the use of Command Post trailers in the performance of radiological work. The Command Post trailers enable Work Supervisory Teams to actively observe and supervise work in progress inside of remote radiological areas. The Command Post trailers are equipped with remote cameras, flat screen video displays, communications equipment and electronic radiation monitoring equipment that enable the Work Supervisory Teams to provide proper work oversight and to ensure worker safety.

As Tank Closure activities increase, so does the demand for Industrial Hygiene (IH) monitoring. In order to meet this demand, Radiological Control Inspectors have been trained to perform and document IH monitoring. This interactive training is provided by professional Industrial Hygienists and increases the Inspectors' knowledge, technical skills and experience in the use of selected IH instruments and survey documentation, which further strengthens the worker safety and health programs.
"SRR has done a tremendous job with their radiological controls performance," said Terrel Spears, Assistant Manager for Waste Disposition Project, DOE-Savannah River Operations Office. "This performance is an excellent indicator that the programs and training that SRR has implemented is working."
Olson added that the nature of SRR's business is high-hazard work, which makes this achievement even more impressive.
"Protection programs are only as good as the employees implementing them, and SRR has a highly skilled and trained workforce who uses these programs daily with excellent results," he said.
SRR is the Savannah River Site's (SRS) Liquid Waste contractor. SRS is owned by DOE. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
