AIKEN, SC (October 7, 2009) – Savannah River Remediation (SRR), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), has initiated a program that allows employees to influence the company’s approach to donating to area non-profit organizations by performing their work safely.

Called the “Zero Lost Time Injury Campaign,” the program rewards a United Way agency $500 every month that SRR employees work without an injury requiring days away from work. The designated agency will be selected by SRR’s employee-based safety teams called Local Safety Improvement Teams or LSITs.

With each month of safe work, which is work without an injury that causes a day of work missed, the LSITs will select the United Way agency for the contribution and two members will be selected to deliver the check to the selected agency. According to Jim French, SRR President and Project Manager, the program is a great way to link the company’s employee safe-work record to the community.

“SRR is built on safety. I am proud that we have a culture that values safe work over everything else,” said French. “Now, we are introducing a plan that will link our site safe performance with a reward to charitable giving within our communities.”

He continued, “In this way, our workers and families are not the only ones who benefit from injury-free performance, but our local communities do as well.”

SRR employees successfully kicked off the new program in August by working the entire month without an injury requiring days away from work. The selected charity for the $500 check is the United Way of Aiken County.

SRS is owned by DOE. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies lead by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and Washington Safety Management Solutions
