AIKEN, S.C. – Several Savannah River Remediation (SRR) employees went to work recently, but not at their customary Savannah River Site (SRS) jobs.
The employees had adopted three projects from the United Way of Aiken County's Project Vision list and were donating multiple days of their time off to give back to the community. To Dave Olson, SRR President and Project Manager, helping out neighbors in need is nothing new for SRR employees.
"I have been at SRS for over 30 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how our employees continue to reach out to the communities to help those in need," Olson said. "Not only are SRR employees the best in the world at what they do, they are the most giving group of individuals I have ever had the pleasure to be associated with. Adopting these Project Visions projects is just another example of their generosity."

One group repaired the roof of a rear porch and nearly replaced an entire front porch at a home in Warrenville. A second group spent three days to completely restore a kitchen in a home in Aiken. The third group replaced the roof of a home in Beech Island. At all three locations, the condition of the homes when the teams arrived were in bad condition, according to Dan Wood, SRR Waste Removal and Tank Closure Manager, and organizer of one work groups. "When you first arrive at the home and see the deplorable conditions, your heart just hurts for those residing there," Wood said. "Once the project is completed, and you see the joy in the homeowner's eyes, it makes it all worthwhile." Sharon Rodgers, President of the United Way of Aiken County, explains the Project Vision list continues to grow with homes owned by the elderly, disabled or low-come families, which are in need of repairs. She welcomes groups like SRR stepping up to adopt a project and perform the repairs. |
"We have a lot of people in our area that have homes in need of repair and they, for whatever reason, cannot afford the repairs," Rodgers said. "The United Way is grateful for groups like the SRR employees who recognize the need and give back."
Approximately, 30 SRR employees formed the three teams that adopted the projects. The employees represented about 12 different SRR work groups
