SRR awards more than $21 million in contracts for infrastructure to accelerate SRS tank closures

AIKEN, S.C. - Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) awarded more than $21 million in contracts this summer to companies spread from Houston, Texas, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to provide services and equipment for the Savannah River Site's (SRS) liquid waste operations.Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the contract awards by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) liquid waste contractor will support infrastructure improvements to accelerate operational closure of many of SRS's large underground waste storage tanks.
Among the larger of the contracts were those to Bethesda, Maryland-based AREVA Federal Services LLC for $4.8 million in services to implement, among other tasks, the Enhanced Chemical Cleaning (ECC) process in the Site's waste tanks. Energy Solutions Federal EPC Inc. of Columbia, Maryland, contracted to provide $3.2 million in process improvements, including melter bubbler technology for the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF), the Site's waste vitrification facility.
Closer to home, Aiken-based URS Safety Management Solutions will perform $2 million of safety analysis work associated with safely accelerating liquid waste operations. The Eaton Corporation with offices in Columbia, SC, will supply an electrical substation valued at nearly $400,000 for infrastructure upgrades in a Site tank farm.
More than 10 contract awards were made during July. SRR's Recovery Act Project Manager, Mark Schmitz, says the timing of the awards reflects the transition from the earlier design and planning activities started in the fall of 2009 when SRR commenced ARRA work to the actual construction and deployment under way now.
Contracts were also awarded to Curtiss Wright for the purchase of submersible blender pumps, valued at $4.7 million, and $1.7 million to Chicago Bridge and Iron for three large storage tanks that will improve waste process efficiency.
The July contract awards follow the more than $40 million in goods and services purchased since last September by SRR from local area and small businesses with Recovery Act funding. SRR was allocated $200 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding in late September 2009 to facilitate tank closure by upgrading infrastructure in the liquid waste operations and improving waste processing.
SRS is owned by DOE. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
