SRR Ready to Train More Interns this Summer

February 7, 2011

AIKEN, S.C. – Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) will hire approximately 40 college students for its summer internship program, mostly from local colleges and universities in North and South Carolina and Georgia.

According to Jacqueline Mack, SRR Internship Coordinator, SRR is looking for students who are a U.S. citizen with a grade point average of 2.5 or greater, with an emphasis on students working on a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics from a four-year accredited university or college, but all majors will be considered.

The cut-off date for accepting resumes was January 31, 2011. All selected applicants will be notified regarding their placement by March 31, 2011.

"Developing our country's future workforce and possibly enticing the students to consider working at Savannah River Site upon graduation is important to us, and we have been fortunate to hire several interns as full-time employees," said Jim French, SRR President and Project Manager. "It is a win-win for all of us. They assist us in our mission to safely disposition liquid waste and operationally close waste tanks."

Interns worked in a wide variety of disciplines, which included Computer Science, Design Authority, Engineering, Finance, Health Protection, Human Resources, Legal and Project Controls.

After completing an internship in 2010, Andrew Jackson was offered a position as an Associate Financial Analyst. He is a graduate of Augusta State University with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. There were many contributing factors responsible for him being offered a position at SRR, "I think my work ethics, time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks and work as a team member were contributing factors," he said.

Two-time intern William Spurlin has a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Georgia Southern University, and accepted a position in January 2011 as a Software Engineer working in the Process and Control Engineering Group.

"The highlight of my internships was the opportunity to get first-hand knowledge about an industry that I had an interest in knowing more about. I also liked the networking aspect. I was interested in working at SRR after my first summer as an intern, but knew after the second summer that this was a company where I wanted to work. They gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge that I had learned in school to real work situations."

Alexander Brown, the latest intern to be hired, graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and is working as an Industrial Hygienist. Brown said, "The way the Site treats the safety and health of its employees was an eye-opener for me. I was very impressed."

SRR is the Savannah River Site's (SRS) Liquid Waste contractor. SRS is owned by DOE. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
