AIKEN, S.C. – Looking to develop the next generation of professionals, Savannah River Remediation (SRR) continued the Savannah River Site's (SRS) commitment of hiring college students for the summer through its collegiate internship program.

This year, SRR hired a record 42 college students, nearly doubling the 22 positions offered last year. The interns, representing mostly local colleges and universities in North and South Carolina and Georgia, will support SRR's liquid waste operations in various engineering, science, computer science, business and finance positions through August.

"We are always excited about hiring potential future professionals each summer, and it is wonderful that we were able to offer so many positions this year," said Jim French, SRR President and Project Manager. "Developing our country's future workforce and possibly enticing the students to consider working at SRS following graduation is important to us."

Jacqueline Mack, SRR Internship and Faculty Participant Program Coordinator, said the students were selected through the numerous career fairs held last fall and this spring on college campuses throughout the south. She indicated the interns were selected from over 250 resumes received.

"Selecting the very best and brightest future engineers, computer scientist and business majors was the primary goal of the Human Resource staff, and we feel we have succeeded," Mack said. "Spending a summer working with our managers and fellow employees will provide the students essential knowledge in preparation for their future careers."

The SRR Internship Program is designed to complement a student's formal education with practical work experience directly related to the student's major. Interns must be a U.S. citizen, have a grade point average of 2.5 or greater, and must be attending a four-year accredited university or college.

"Our hope is these students get the most out of their summer experience and receive an idea of what to expect after they graduate from this real-world experience," French said.

SRS is owned by DOE. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
