SRR Employee Earns Top Project Management Institute Recognition
Surendra Gupta receives his diploma for completing the Project Management Institute (PMI®) Leadership Institute Master Class from Kim Cassara, SRR Project Design and Construction Director and SRR's PMI® champion.

AIKEN, S.C. -- Surendra Gupta, a Savannah River Remediation (SRR) project engineer, recently completed the Project Management Institute's (PMI®) Leadership Institute Master Class, becoming the first person in Savannah River Site (SRS) history to be included in the elite PMI® organization.

The class was a year-long initiative that provided intensive training, skills development and support for a group of 18 volunteer professionals from all over the world. The program focused on core knowledge areas and engaged each participant in varied activities for professional and personal growth as volunteer leaders.

PMI® is a not-for-profit professional association with the primary goal of advancing the practice, science and profession of project management throughout the world. Founded in 1969, PMI® has more than 500,000 members.

"The PMI® Leadership Institute Master Class is a win-win-win situation for participants, for employers and for PMI®," said Jim French, SRR President and Project Manager, who added his congratulations to Gupta. "Those who participate gain new knowledge and experiences, insights into key leadership issues and techniques, and expand their network of global project managers. Communities benefit from visionary leaders. PMI® benefits because of the increased opportunities for members to contribute to the global organization. And SRR benefits because we have Surendra as an employee."

The year-long class represented a major commitment for participants. Face-to-face meetings were held in Amsterdam and Italy.

"For some, the decision to participate was easy; for others the decision was more complicated," Gupta said. "Altogether, we represented a wide variety of leadership roles, life and PMI® experiences."

Gupta has worked at SRS for 20 years. He has been a member of PMI® for 12 years and has served as VP-Professional Development & Training and VP-Programs for the PMI®-Savannah River Chapter. He is project engineer on tank closures, including the next waste tanks slated for closure.

SRS is owned by DOE. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
