Aiken, S.C. -- Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) recently received the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Recycling/Reuse 2010 Environmental Stewardship Award for its lead recycle program, an effort that will save taxpayers approximately $350,000.

The award was presented last month at the DOE 2010 Integrated Safety Management Champions Workshop, held in Augusta.

Approximately 228,000 pounds of lead, used in tank closure and other project processes, was shipped from the Savannah River Site to a recycle vendor in Oak Ridge, TN. The lead will be smelted and dispersed to other DOE sites for shielding. All operations were conducted in a safe manner, protecting workers and the public.

SRR is the Savannah River Site's (SRS) Liquid Waste contractor. SRS is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.
