Aiken, S.C. Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is helping Aiken Technical College's new nuclear quality control program by providing $10,000 for curriculum development.

According to Dave Olson, SRR president and project manager, "Savannah River Remediation is pleased to step forward to help ATC get this program off the ground successfully. In these times of austere budgets, we know this gift will aid their work to train students in this important nuclear area."

Earlier this year, Aiken Technical College (ATC) received a DOE grant to develop and implement specialization certificates in quality control and nuclear welding. Dr. Susan Winsor, president of ATC, said she was gratified to receive the funding and knows that it will ultimately provide a return on investment by providing high-quality workers to companies in the nuclear industry such as SRR.

"We must be sure that highly skilled employees are ready when they are needed," Winsor said. "We expect the nuclear industry to provide exceptional opportunities for future employees, including students who may be in middle school or high school today and are considering their future career path."

The donation was announced at a recent Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness (CNTA) breakfast sponsored by SRR.

The Savannah River Site (SRS) is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). SRR is the SRS Liquid Waste contractor for DOE. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Safety Management Solutions.

ATC is a public, open-door, comprehensive two-year college offering associate's degrees, diplomas and certificates in more than 80 areas of study with a special focus on currently in-demand career fields.
