American Recovery and Reinvestment Act at the Savannah River Site
Overview of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
![]() |
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009. The Recovery Act includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need. |
Implementing the Recovery Act
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) received $6 billion for the purpose of bringing jobs to states across our nation, while at the same time accelerating environmental cleanup work. Identified projects will focus on accelerating cleanup of soil and groundwater, transportation and disposal of waste and cleaning and demolishing former weapons complex facilities.
From the Recovery Act funds received by DOE EM, $1.615 billion was allocated to the Savannah River Site (SRS) to jump-start the regional economy and expedite environmental cleanup. On September 23, 2009, Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) was allocated $200 million, which will be used to enhance Liquid Waste Operations.
Recovery Act Funding for SRS Liquid Waste Operations
The Recovery Act funding alloted to SRR will be used to replace aging and unreliable infrastructure at SRS while preparing for future waste processing. Specifically, SRR will use the funds to:
- Accelerate piping needs for the future start-up of the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF)
- Expand the capacity for salt waste feed
- Install infrastructure for salt waste disposition
- Install infrastructure for high level waste disposition at the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF)
- Increase the DWPF facility throughput
